Susan Smith: Sorry or Sorry She Was Caught?

susan smith.jpgGregg and Matt have been angling for interviews with some central figures from infamous TC cases of the past. This is part of an upcoming series were working on for Crime Rant.

Do you remember the Susan Smith case? Almost a dozen years ago, the South Carolina woman said a carjacker took her boys, when, in fact, she had drowned them by locking them in the car and sending them into the bottom of a lake. She killed 2-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex so she’d be free to carry on with a co-worker.

Ring a bell? A very loud and sad bell, we’re sure.

Here’s a transcript of her confession:

When I left my home on Tuesday, Oct. 25, I was very emotionally distraught. I didn’t want to live anymore! I felt like things could never get any worse. When I left home, I was going to ride around a little while and then go to my mom’s.

As I rode and rode and rode, I felt even more anxiety coming upon me about not wanting to live. I felt I couldn’t be a good mom anymore, but I didn’t want my children to grow up without a mom. I felt I had to end our lives to protect us from any grief or harm.

I had never felt so lonely and so sad in my entire life. I was in love with someone very much, but he didn’t love me and never would. I had a very difficult time accepting that. But I had hurt him very much, and I could see why he could never love me.

When I was at John D. Long Lake, I had never felt so scared and unsure as I did then. I wanted to end my life so bad and was in my car ready to go down that ramp into the water, and I did go part way, but I stopped. I went again and stopped. I then got out of the car and stood by the car a nervous wreck.

Why was I feeling this way? Why was everything so bad in my life? I had no answers to these questions. I dropped to the lowest point when I allowed my children to go down that ramp into the water without me.

I took off running and screaming “Oh God! Oh God, no! “What have I done? Why did you let this happen? I wanted to turn around so bad and go back, but I knew it was too late. I was an absolute mental case! I couldn’t believe what I had done.

I love my children with all my (a picture of a heart). That will never change. I have prayed to them for forgiveness and hope that they will find it in their (a picture of a heart) to forgive me. I never meant to hurt them!! I am sorry for what has happened and I know that I need some help. I don’t think I will ever be able to forgive myself for what I have done.

My children, Michael and Alex, are with our Heavenly Father now, and I know that they will never be hurt again. As a mom, that means more than words could ever say.

I knew from day one, the truth would prevail, but I was so scared I didn’t know what to do. It was very tough emotionally to sit and watch my family hurt like they did. It was time to bring a peace of mind to everyone, including myself.

My children deserve to have the best, and now they will. I broke down on Thursday, Nov. 3, and told Sheriff Howard Wells the truth. It wasn’t easy, but after the truth was out, I felt like the world was lifted off my shoulders.

I know now that it is going to be a tough and long road ahead of me. At this very moment, I don’t feel I will be able to handle what’s coming, but I have prayed to God that he give me the strength to survive each day and to face those times and situations in my life that will be extremely painful. I have put my total faith in God, and he will take care of me.

Crime Rant wants to know what would you like us to ask Susan Smith if we get the interview? What about her explanation?

Does this case haunt you, too?

Who would be on your hit list for Crime Rant to take on with a prison interview (provided he or she agrees, of course)?

57 Responses to “Susan Smith: Sorry or Sorry She Was Caught?”

  1. Tina Says:

Susan Smith killed her two boys b/c she wanted to be with another man, Tom Findlay, a rich single bachelor. I would ask “Susan, isn’t the real reason you murdered your boys is because you thought that Tom Findlay would come running back you you”? Remember, that Findlay wrote SS a dear john letter breaking it off with her largely b/c of her children. Findlay did not want a ready made family.
    More questions for SS:
    1) Are you really sorry for killing your sons OR just sorry you were caught in your own web of lies?
    2) Why didn’t you turn over custody of Michael and Alex to your husband, David Smith? Why kill them?
    3) Did you really believe that you would get away with murdering your sons by making up that black carjacker story?
    4) What were you thinking when you went on national tv begging for the safe return of your boys KNOWING ALL ALONG that they were at the bottom of the lake dead because YOU sent them there?

Yes, this case still haunts me to this day. It’s absolutely incomprehensible for me to understand how a parent can murder their own children unless they are psychotic or severly mentally ill like Andrea Yates. SS on the other hand, was/is selfish and killed her boys for selfish reasons. I don’t feel any empathy for her whatsoever.

  2. Kathy Sturgeon Says:

This will be wicked interesting, guys. I wonder how many of these people will agree to talk to you? Susan Smith is a great one to start with. And to me, if she wasn’t totally mentally ill, she would have given the boys to her husband or to grandparents. I’d like to ask her:
Susan, can you even begin to IMAGINE the terror that you inflicted upon your prescious sons.

Can you see them scratching at the windows?

Can you hear their last gasps of of breath?

Can you hear their cries of horror?

Can you hear them saying Why Mommy Why?

You sent those babies to a watery, terrifying death. Sometimes I really do think the punishment should fit the crime. Lock you in a car and send you down the same ramp.

A few others that haunt me are:

Diane Downs -definately the worst one.

    Betty Broderick

    Thomas Capano

And another one that I can’t remember his name, but he had his wife killed in front of their children in a car…she was beautiful, blonde hair????

I admire all of your work. This project is very exciting!! Thanks as always.

  3. Laura James Says:

Amazing the number of times she refers to herself… How many times does “I” appear in this snippet of confession?

I’d like to know if she reads true crime in prison, has read any accounts of other mothers who have committed such crimes, and if she’d discuss those cases. Has she gotten any insight into why she did what she did from the stories of other mothers who have done what she did?

    >Who would be on your hit list for Crime Rant
    > to take on with a prison interview (provided
    > he or she agrees, of course)?

    Father Gerald Robinson

  4. Laura James Says:

Actually those true crime questions would apply to anyone who’s been in prison for a while.

I’d love to read Susan Smith on Diane Downs, and vice versa.

  5. Miss James Says:

The case haunts me, and her explanation turns my stomach. You don’t use drawn hearts and/or smiley faces in a written statement meant to rationalise the murder of your children. She had/has issues. I’ll never understand. To do what this woman did is beyond unthinkable. It goes way beyond mere selfishness.

I’ll happily read the interview if you guys are granted the “honor” of speaking with her. I’ll offer no questions to ask because I trust you to cover every aspect you can in the time allotted. I find you both to be quite thorough.

    As for additional interviews:
I’ve been wondering how The Night Stalker is enjoying the married life.

I know she’s not in prison, nor was she actually involved in a serious crime, but what has the Runaway Jennifer Wilbanks been up to for the last year or so?

I can’t think of anyone else off the top of my head. Basically, though, if you write it I will read it.

  6. DebG Says:

I would ask Susan Smith what prevented her from taking her own life after she killed the children – why did she not go through with it??

As far as who I would like interviewed, I would say one would be Andrew Luster, only because I would like to know how he turned into such a sick, demented, depraved f***.

  7. Gregg Says:

    Kathy and Laura,
Diane Downs is on our list for sure. I met with her a couple years ago. I’ll blog about that — her thoughts on Ann Rule, the microchip she thinks is planted in her arm, her prison lover…and how she misses her kids. Stay tuned.

  8. Kimpossible Says:

I remember this case like it was yesterday. It was in Union SC, though not NC. When the truth came out, I had nightmares for a very long time. How any mother can hurt her innocent babies is incomprehensible.

I like Tina’s #2 question, because that’s what I always wondered. Why not just take them to the dad and hand them over? The same answer always comes to mind: Because that would have made her look bad to everyone around, including Findlay, who was the one and only reason she killed them. After the “abduction” She calls her friends at Tom’s business and asks them if he’s asked about her, and when he’s going to visit her? Why on earth would she care about that when her babies are “missing?”

I don’t believe for a minute that she was going into the water with those babies, she had every intention of killing them off, and she had every intention of sticking with the black man story, as ignorant as it was.

Anyway, I could go on for hours about this, but as far as questions go, how about the letter that she wrote to David (her ex-husband) after her confession. From Crime Library: The letter was filled with the phrase, “I’m sorry,” and complaints that Susan’s feelings were getting lost in the midst of everyone else’s sorrow.

What???!!!! HER FEELINGS????!!! She’s a cunning, manipulative &*^%, and I certainly wouldn’t want to interview her, you’re not going to get anything but lies from her. But if you do interview her, I’d be interested to see what she says now, over 10 years since she killed her babies. I’m confident she’s “found God”, you’ll probably hear a lot about that.

I’ll end my rant here, because I could really go on for days about this.

  9. Melissa Says:

All questions covered in here. I would LOVE to hear what she has to say about Diane Downs as well.

  10. DebG Says:

    Diane Downs – DEFINATELY!!!

  11. Kimpossible Says:

Anybody remember the name of that guy that killed his wife and children because he’d gotten in such financial trouble, then went on to Mexico and shacked up with someone he met there? I believe he was Morman, and it wasn’t that long ago. I’ve been searching for the story and can’t find it. That’s one guy I’d love for Matt and Gregg to interview.

  12. DebG Says:

Christian Longo?? But I think he was Jehovah’s Witness.

  13. D.P. Says:

Ah, yes. Christian Longo. Now there is a psychopath if ever there was one. That guy literally made me puke.

  14. Shelly Says:

Sounds cool guys! How about Perry March? But I doubt he’d ever tell where is wife’s body is so that her family could give her a final resting place.
I have a question … have you ever heard of any cases where the convicted killer actually finally admits to the crime after all the denials? Or are they all just sociopaths that don’t know the meaning of the word truth?
Keep up the great work guys, love this site.

  15. JrZyChris Says:

    Miss James,

Thought you would be interested if you haven’t seen it already – Mrs. Ramirez has answered some correspondence from the guys over at Serial Killer Central – she answered several questions I’m guessing they asked her in a letter to her. They have posted her letter on the site.

  16. betsy Says:

I understand why you want to interview her. Those of us who are interested in true crime are also interested in getting into the minds of killers. However, she is a narcissist. That is why she killed her children instead of giving them to their father. It was -never- about the children other than that they were in the way of her happy future. To this day it is still all about her and not about her children. She thinks it’s all okay because they are with their Heavenly Father. As if that makes what she did okay? She confesses and feels “the world was lifted of my shoulders”?? I am still shocked and sickened by her confession. Where is her remorse? Where is her horror? What about having to wake up everyday and thinking about what you did to your children? What about being such a shamefully selfish human being?? She never loved those children with all of her heart. They were nothing to her. So I will end this where I started: She is a narcissist. If and when you interview her, I don’t care what questions you ask her. It will still be all “I” and “me”. She has no insight worth a damn about why she did what she did. I have no doubt she will talk to you. A good narcissist never passes up the opportunity for attention or to be on stage. My point is, why waste your talents and energy on someone who, no matter what she is asked, will never be able to answer the questions we would like answered. She can’t. She does not have the ability to shine the light on anything other than the very thin top layer of herself. I have a problem with giving her more attention. BUT………….

I will still read your interview with her, damn it.

    Rant over. Carry on.

  17. betsy Says:

    Shelly:

Ted Bundy admitted at the end to many of his crimes after years of denial and tried to make a deal to extend his life by alluding to more crimes he had committed but had yet to admit to. They fried him anyway. :)

  18. Cricket Says:

I too feel that anything that comes out of SS mouth will just be more lies, so why bother?

    …BECUASE we’re nosy [giggle] breed that’s why…and I would read it anyway…too…damn it.

As for a crime that has HAUNTED me…

Pretty strong words which are hard pressed to single one crime out of the billions we have heard about that would easily fit that discription…suffice to say that by now, in the year 2006 not much fazes me anymore, however since you asked; one crime does continue to haunt me and THAT crime is the Sylvia Likens Story.

Sylvia Likens was a teenager in Indiana that was tortured and murdered by her sitter and HER sitter’s children; Gertrude Baniszewski.

    HIT LIST:

    Stephanie Baniszewski-Gert’s daughter-Indianapolis,IN.

    Jason Bautista-Riverside,CA.

    Theresa Cross Knorr-Sacramento,CA.

    Jeff Gorton-Flint,MI.

…and ANY surviving neighbors of the late Kitty Genovese-1964/NY.

    Cricket

  19. Cricket Says:

CORRECTION: I meant to say “BeCAuse we’re A nosEy breed…giggle…[sorry].

….and Susan Wright & Diana Downs too.
    Cricket

  20. Linda Washington Says:

Susan Smith and Diane Downs, one and the same? Ask Susan if she thought Farrah Faucett would play her in a movie if she murdered her children?Question 2, Did she kill her children for 10 minutes of fame? Question 3, Why does she get religon now, instead of following the ten commandments before she murdered her children….thou shalt not kill? Question 4, who is her idol? We know it is not God…ranting enough. I bought bitter almonds, can’t wait to read it. Gregg, keep up the good work. Thanks for this site.

  21. Kimpossible Says:

Shelly, the one that stands out most in my mind in recent days is Carly Brucia. Went through that whole da*n trial in denial, and then he decides to apologize during his sentencing. Thank God that judge gave him death, he so deserved it.

  22. Kimpossible Says:

That’s it, Christian Longo! Geez, I’d LOVE to hear what that nutcase has to say.

  23. Laurie Gilman Says:

I agree with everyone above as far as Susan Smith…She already got me once with her woe is me where are my babies act…she will never get me again. Whatever she has to say is a lie as far as I am concerned.

I would love to see an interview with (Dr/Paramedic?) Michael Swango. It freaks me out someone like him could have easily been my partner!!

    Laurie

  24. nicolars Says:

Betty Broderick would be a good one! I wonder if she has every been able to let go of her bitterness and hatred for her ex-husband and his wife and realize how terrible her crime was.

  25. D.P. Says:

One crime has long fascinated me…the John List murders. Quiet, nerdy dad methodically slaughters his whole family (after first notifying school that the family was going away on vacation!) Then disappears for over twenty years before he is recognized by a nieghbor on an American’s Most Wanted episode.
That is one head I would love to take a peek inside.

  26. Tina Says:

I can think of a few criminals for Gregg and Matt to interview:
    1) Susan Polk, a nutjob from Orinda, CA. Court tv has a lot of info on SP and her case.
    2) Betty Broderick
    3) Clara Harris, she killed her cheating hubby by running over him with her mercedes in Tx.
    4) John Hinckley,Jr.
    5) Scott Peterson, I know everything SP says is a lie, but, I’d be curious as to what he has to say to either of you.

  27. Cricket Says:

The John List story is a good choice too…he later claimed it was due to financial pressures at not being able to support his family in the lifestyle he wanted them to live in…something to do with the way his father or mother treated him…I liken it to Tony Perkins, Psycho movie.

What has always facinated me about this story is he claimed financial pressures YET…the house after the murders was found to have a ORIGINAL TIFFANY CHANDALEAR hanging from one of the many ceilings in the house…that could have sold for what the house cost, TEN times over….surely someone who KNEW valuables like he did, knew that it was worth something, so I don’t buy the financial pressures…

But it would be interesting to “see” what he was really thinking about on that day, and how he survived his personal demons surrounding the murders enough so, as to actually pass at being “normal” and go on and live a half-decent life after the fact, and even re-marry [figuratively]another woman who was in complete denial even after he was caught.

Another interesting tidbit, is that rumors have it the house was haunted after the murders and that lights and music could be heard coming from it long after the bodies were removed and the house sealed up….add the location; down a long dark lane…and makes for some pretty good story-telling, seeing as Halloween is coming up soon [giggle].

  28. Kathy Sturgeon Says:

Has anyone read the book about Girly Chew, the Malaysian girl who married the psycho Daizien Hossencofft?? (His real name turned out to be Armand Chavez). He taunted the investigators that they’d never find her body, and they haven’t so far as I know. His girlfriend faces the death penalty (he avoided it). This was in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I doubt he’d talk to anyone, and if he did, he’d be spewing the “aliens” are here bullcrap. Anyway, a great true crime book to read.

  29. JrZyChris Says:

John List would be an excellent choice for an interview, but you’d have to get crackin’ – have you seen him lately?

Also, Robert O. Marshall. (Blind Faith) – bet he’d talk. They were just back in court last month as a matter of fact.

  30. Shelly Says:

betsey and Kimpossible, thanks for answering my question. I didn’t realize that the guy that killed Carly admitted it. I, too, am thankful he received the death penalty.
Kathy, I read the book about Diazen Hossencofft and saw a story about him on Court TV. What a freak! I thought he was frightening just reading about him, then to actually see him on TV, he was even worse! What a strange story that was.

  31. Melissa Says:

Is the reason people cant remember Joseph Smith’s name because his name is Joseph Smith?

I dont think so, because we all remember Susan.

Its not just here, people just never remember his name. Strange considering what the hell he did.

  32. TrueCrimeChick/Anita Ring Says:

Some oldies but goodies: Carol Ann Fugate (out), Tex Watson (still in), Richard Ramirez, Karla Homolka (shamefully, she’s out), Tommy Lynn Sells, Kenneth Bianchi, or even Ted Kaczynski.

As for SS, she’s right: God will take care of her. And if she doesn’t come clean and admit why she killed them, God won’t be very kind about it.

  33. becky in germany Says:

This is what I would like to ask Susan:

when the car was sinking and you weren’t in it..but you knew your CHILDREN were…at any point did you consider diving in and bailing them out?

My brotherinlaw happens to be an executive manager at ADESA (nationwide sells used and re-poed cars) in Charlotte, NC. Susan, he got your car into their shop and they had to get it ready for auction. (no shit). The water damage was almost irrepairable….but they were able to do it. So, susan….than your car goes on the dealer auction block. It sells to a dealer. It was all scrubbed and clean looking. It looked great….like nothing happened. And the dealer sold it. So someone now drives around the US in your death chamber without even knowing it. That is FUCKED UP.

ps, I have seen pictures of the car before and after shop work. I cannot believe it still ran…but it did.

  34. Tina Says:

I am really surprised to hear about Susan Smith’s car being fixed up and sold. The poor person driving around in it doesn’t even know it was a death chamber?! Yes, that is F-d up. I thought that David Smith was going to have the car destroyed after Susan’s trial. I am really shocked by this!

To own SS’s car ‘death chamber ‘ I would think, would be like living in one of the infamous houses where murders took place i,e, Peterson, Yates, Sharon Tate’s home to name a few.

  35. D.P. Says:

“John List would be an excellent choice for an interview, but you’d have to get crackin’ – have you seen him lately?”

    LMAO!!!!

  36. becky in germany Says:

Yes. I think the car was recieved by the auto auction from the police impound lot (not sure on this). It really disturbed my BIL however, and he and a few others (he is the executive manager) were the only ones that knew about it. Actually the dealer who ended up purchasing the car didn’t know about it either (they felt it best that way…). Still, I get a visual in my head everytime I hear the name Susan Smith. Of someone driving around in her car. And yes, her husband could have thought it was being destroyed. This auction also takes cars for parts and destroys the rest. My BIL tells me that cars that have been submerged are the hardest ones to restore and are usually used for parts. However, when they got the car in and did a prelim inspection they found hardly any damage that wasn’t fixable so the mechanics got it ready for the dealer auction.

    Isn’t that some CREEPY SHIT?????

  37. Dog Lover Says:

My first feeling is for those poor, poor children whose last thoughts were incredible fear and confusion. Not to mention suffering a slow, drowning death. As far as Susan – I remember the original newscasts before she was deemed guilty. A friend of mine with two kids just seethed, “She is guilty, she knows what happened to the kids”. I think when people grow up in childhoods that are void of emtion and love, a hallow place develops – and even their own kids won’t fill it up (quite the contrary, children with needs drain them further). I think Susan had no emotional stability or support, I’m sure she was desperate for what she thought would fill her void (that geek that spurned her). I think she was in survival mode and murdered her children to get what she wanted – which included the idiot guy…then also to rid herself of the “need machines”, her children. I bet she was like a drowning person searching for air. I look at those angel boys and wish I had them here with me now. I’m sure any family member would have readily taken them (including dad). I don’t think Susan took the lives of those children because she felt they couldn’t live without her, because if she did, she would have most assuredly killed herself too. Susan had a sociopathic bone in her because she ultimately considered herself first and foremost. Her needs had to met – no matter what. The dictionay has her picture next to sociopath.

  38. Cricket Says:

becky in germany says: Actually the dealer who ended up purchasing the car didn’t know about it either (they felt it best that way…). Still, I get a visual in my head everytime I hear the name Susan Smith. Of someone driving around in her car.

    **********************
THAT is some *REAL* creepy doo-hocky.

I think that cars should have a clause in their sales too…like real estate does, that if anything happened to or IN it, that may prove disconcerning to the buyer once found out, it must be revealed PRIOR to the actual final sale.

Houses have it and cars should too…

…and the argument that houses are ok to have this clause but not cars, simply because houses cost TONS of dollars and are a permanent structure/fixture doesn’t hold water.

If only because some cars [vehicles in general] cost as much as some homes, and some are even considered “heirlooms” to be passed on to children just like homes are too….

I have a 66 Mustang Fastback 2+2, in Robins Egg Blue-all original, that was passed down to me that way and cars like homes are just as often gifted.

It would be interesting to do a book about “death” homes and vehicles, and their current owners and what if any feelings that they may have, and if the history of the item actually bothers them or not, considering what occurred in them or even if they are aware of the items history.
    Just a thought.

  39. Have compassion on the innocent, not the guilty Says:

I have been reviewing the 1999 Rowan murder trial in Port Angeles, WA. Dr. Rowan was found innocent by reason of insanity. He has been out of confinement for some years.

This is sort of ancient history, but here’s a upscale kind of guy who killed his wife with an ax after taking out a $500000 insurance policy, then stuffed her in a car and ran her off the road to make it look like an accident. Yeah, it happened in Port Angeles, and most of us would rather be dead than in Port Angeles, but after all… So here’s a guy free as a breeze, and wouldn’t he make a great interview? Just make sure there’s no axes around;=)

  40. Gregg Says:

I want to thank everyone for participating on this particular thread. Seems that there is still a lot of emotion surrounding this nightmare. I feel see it in every post.

Also, thanks for all of the terrific suggestions. Matt and I will see what we can come up with.

    Take care.

  41. Melly Says:

I am a little bit behind everyone else, but the case that haunts me the most is that of Shanda Sharer. I think it would be fascinating to get the viewpoint of each of the 4 girls convicted of her killing, 10 years later now that they have grown into womanhood.

Along the same lines – Sarah Kolb. Some way to get at how someone so young can be so vicious.

  42. Tina Says:

Another young vicious killer to interview is Scott Dyleski. He was just sentenced to LWOP in the slaying of Pamela Vitale.

  43. Terri Says:

Tina’s #2 question is the best… Why not just give the kids to their father? She could have made up some lie as to why if she needed to save face. Maybe that lie would have been easier to believe than the ridiculous carjacking story.

I do not think that Susan confessed because her family deserved to know the truth, etc. She probably confessed because somebody noticed that she spoke of her kids in the past tense in her plea to the public to return them safely. She gave it away that she knew those babies were dead! (I read about this in the book “I Know You Are Lying” by Mark McClish, which I highly recommend.

As for haunting stories, I agree with Melly that the story of Shanda Sharer’s torture and death at the hands of cruel, teenage girls was the most haunting of all. I read that on Crime Library and was upset about it for days. Sometimes I send stories to my mother so she can read them, but I didn’t send her that one because it was just too upsetting.

    Terri

  44. notruthnojustice Says:

Why don’t you interview Andrew Luster? Then you can come back here and twist everything he said to make him appear guilty. The man is innocent. They never even found any GHB and they certainly didn’t find it or a “rape kit” in Mexico. Check your facts. You won’t find one PRIMARY source for any of that. The star witness lied repeatedly under oath and admitted it in open court. Two innocent children are deprived of their father based on nothing but the lies of 3 money-hungry perjurers and Dog “my role model was Jimmy Swaggart” Chapman.

  45. Queen Elizabeth Says:

I have a question or two for Susan Smith.
1)Was there ever a time in your early childhood that you felt your mother would rather kill you to be with another man?
    2) How can you sleep at night without hearing your children screaming in your ears for help?
    3) How could you possibly think that by murdering your own flesh and blood, you would win back the man you thought you loved? Was this man so sadistic as to accept you after this hideous crime? Do you really think anyone could love someone who had drowned her own children?
    4) How does it feel to be so alone in the world knowing that 99% of the population would rather see you drown in the same manner as your children?
    5) What kind of remorse do you feel?
    6) you stated in your letter that your babies are now “in the arms of Our Heavenly Father”; how does it feel knowing that you sent them there?
    7) Are you afraid for your own “Judgement Day” before Him?

    Just a few questions.
    Queen Elizabeth

  46. Ellen Says:

I don’t feel sorry for her one bit. She knew what she was doing, killing her boys, because she couldn’t handle being without the man that she loved. She needs to suffer like her boys did. I wish I would get a hold of her and make her suffer, but I am better than her. I have 3 kids of my own and I worry about them while I am at work, or even when they are asleep. How could she? She can rot in hell!

  47. Curious Says:

I have looked through all of the comments and I agree. But I do find something curious about them all…. somthing missing that gave this story the headline news.

So I along with all of the questions I agree with…would like to ask her a couple of questions:

“How do you feel about killing your own children, then to add insult to your heinous crime, try to blame an imaginary African American Man as though doing this is playing on the old and classic “Only this sort of crime could be caused by African Americans”

In her attempts to blame an imaginary black man was probably her downfall. When she proclaimed that it happened? The manhunt was intensified….and her story started to fall apart.

She is a horror. In every way imaginable.

Over the years…two guards have been found guilty of having sex with Ms. Smith…and her ad for a penpal was pulled down from a site that has people write to inmates.

Seems to me she is having a fine time in prison. No kids to worry about…sex with guards. And every once in a while convincing people it might still be that black guy who drowned her kids…and having people believe it.

A horror. A complete horror of a human.

  48. Janet Says:

Yeah… and let’s not forget it came out in the trial that Susan’s twisted religious conservative step-dad had been molesting her since her teens.

“During her trial, Smith’s stepfather, Republican Party and Christian Coalition leader Beverly Russell, testified that he had sexually molested Susan when she was a teenager and again in the months leading up to her drowning the boys.”

    Why isn’t he in jail?

Some criminals are born, others are created by their parents.

  49. Kristy Says:

I remember watching the news when this horrible incident happened. I was just 15 yrs. old Now I am 30 and a mother of three. Ive watched the updates on Oprah etc., and I am disgusted and very sad for those boys and the many others that murderer hurt. As a mom, I know just how tough @ emotionally draining it can be, IVE BEEN THERE. But even with the worst possible depression or anything else, The thought of hurting my kids, isnt even a thought. How dare her take those babies lives, why couldnt she take them to a family member? I am a christian, but I only hold hate for her. She doesnt diserve parole ever. We all have had things done to us growing up, but as a parent we have the choice @ responsibility of keeping evil from our heaven sent babies, not the choice to DO EVIL unto our kids. MAY SHE ROT IN HELL!!!!

  50. CS2007 Says:

My daughter is exactly the same age as little Alex was when he died, so it hit me hard. Plus, I live in NC, so this was a local thing, and I just couldn’t believe it. I wanted those boys to be found alive so badly and it devastated me when she confessed. We will never know the real truth about why she did it, that is something she is going to have to take up with God.

  51. Libby Says:

I am sorry but in the first paragraph of your website you say that Susan Smith was fr. NC, sorry she was (as a matter of fact) from Union, SC…how could you get that wrong.????????????

  52. Cecilia Says:

First of all I need to say that Susan is a crazy murderer. How can you watch your car go down the lake with your two children in the car. I just try every day not to think of those children’s cries as they drawn. I have two boys that I have raised with an abusive partner. They are now 23 and 16 and I stayed to raise my children. Many men out there who new of my situation wanted to befriend me and I refused. My focus was my children and that they grow to know who their dad is. No Man Will Make Me Kill My Children in order to be with him. Being in a bad relationship makes me have very many bad and depressing days but at the end of the day, when I look at those two boys who were clueless about what I was going through, my face and their face would light up. I actually welcome their noise and their demands at that time. I don’t understand and don’t really care how Susan’s emotional state was. She had a lot of options. She has family around that she could have dump, yes I use the word dump because the children were like a hindrance (I the writer of this story has no family. I met my partner and I thought we will build a family, but since has family, he completely abandoned me and abuses me verbally and emotionally). Susan could have just abandoned the children with the natural father. I declare thus: “SUSAN YOU A DEVIL ITSELF. THERE IS GOOD AND EVIL AND woman you are EVIL.

Secondly as a side comment of every white crowd reading; I wish to let you all know the “A BLACK MAN KIDNAPPED ME AND MY BABY OR BABIES DON’T WORK. IN THE OLD RACIST DAYS, THE POLICE WILL CAPTURE ANY UNFORTUNATE BLACK MAN AND KILL HIM. IN MANY INSTANCES WHERE THE VICTIM CRIES “BLACK” THE POLICE BECOME VERY SUSPICIOUS. THANK GOD FOR THE CHANGE IN RACIST AMERICA. YESTERDAY ANOTHER WOMAN WHO CRIED “BLACK” HAS BEEN CAPTURED. SEE THE STORY BELOW:

IT LOOKS LIKE 9-year-old Julia Rakoczy’s thrill ride through the national headlines didn’t end on the tea cups at Disney World.

Safely reunited with her dad after her mom’s sensational bogus kidnap report that took over a 24-hour news cycle, the Bucks County grade-schooler arrived safely home late last night, but is slated for another star turn on national TV.

For that we can apparently thank the deep pockets of ABC television – ironically, also owned by the Walt Disney Co. – which paid for Anthony Rakoczy to fly to Florida yesterday to collect his daughter, according to an Inquirer report attributed to the Orange County, Fla., Sheriff’s Department.

One American who probably won’t be watching is Julia’s mom, Bonnie Sweeten, 38, who was scheduled for a hearing in an Orlando courtroom at 9 a.m. today, the first step toward her own more downbeat return to Bucks County.

The suburban mom is facing charges of identity theft and of making a false report after her remarkable tale – that she and her daughter had been kidnapped on busy Street Road in Bucks County by BLACK MEN who forced them into the trunk of a Cadillac – unraveled in the course of a day of solid police work.

  54. Paul Weston Says:

I’m actually a penpal of Susan.
I’m not here to defend her or accuse her…Gawd I’ve had too many of these discussions already.
But if you want to ask a question about her, please go right ahead.

  55. bunni Says:

I actually am not familiar with the case that the main story is about, but…

Cricket mentioned forever ago that someone she wants interviewed is Jason Bautista from Riverside, CA… That is not an interview I would care to read, as I knew Jason personally. The only question I have for him all these years later, is why didn’t you take your brother and run? Jane convinced him that no one cared about him and no one would help him, and I have continued to find it heartbreaking that he believed her.

  56. Lisa D. Johnson Says:

My son, Tyler, will be 19 in a few weeks. My son, Kaleb, is almost 17. I have a daughter who will be celebrating her 15 birthday this month, as well. I was just about to deliver her when Susan Smith drowned her babies, Alex and Michael. Alex and Michael were the same ages of my 2 boys. This haunted me then as it does now…15 years later. I gave my beautiful little girl the name of Alex Mikayla in tribute to the lost lives of her boys. I will NEVER understand this. I cry for them now and as I feel so blessed by having my own children, watching them grow into the young adults they are today, I often wonder how Alex and Michael would have lived their lives and the kind of men they would be. This was a loss for everyone, a loss we can never measure for everyone has their own individual gifts to share and there will never be 2 people exactly like they were again.
