JonBenet Ramsey, An Inch Closer to the Truth?

Undoubtedly, you’ve heard the news.
This isn’t the day when Kennedy got shot, or if you’re younger, the place you were when the planes hit the WTC.
But today, a shot rang out in the TC world and it is still ringing in our ears.
An arrest was made in the nearly decade old JonBenet Ramsey murder case.
Here’s a snip from the AP:
BOULDER, Colo. – A man suspected in the slaying of 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey was arrested Wednesday in Thailand in a surprise breakthrough in one of the nation’s most lurid murder cases — a decade-old crime some feared would never be solved.
District Attorney Mary Lacy said the arrest followed several months of work. She would not disclose any details about the suspect, but the Ramsey family’s attorney in Atlanta said the man was a schoolteacher who once lived in nearby Conyers, Ga.
Federal officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, identified the suspect as John Mark Karr, a 42-year-old American, and said he was already being held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges. CBS reported he will be brought back to the United States this weekend.
I was driving in my car coming across the Tacoma Narrows when I heard a CBS producer I know talk about the arrest. He never thought the Ramseys had a thing to do with their daughter’s day-after-Christmas murder.
Some of us did.
I immediately thought of the Ramsey family, of course. Father and brother are all that remains of the family that lived under the cloud of suspicion since the day news broke that a kid beauty queen had been murdered. Patsy, as you know, didn’t live long enough to see the achingly slow wheels of justice finally beginning to move.
I also thought of all the garbage that has bombarded us since her tiny body was found in that rambling Boulder, Colo., Tudor home. We’re talking media kudzu. The rushed-to-print books. The TV movies. The stupid beauty queen jokes. All of the speculating that comes with a high profile case and our need to pick a side.
Now, we could be an inch closer to the truth.
Now maybe Patsy and JonBenet will finally rest in peace.

I was stunned when I heard the news on the radio after work. I mentioned it to my sister-in-law on the phone and she said she always thought it was the brother who killed JonBenet and that the parents covered it up so they wouldn’t “lose” both childen. I had some suspicions about the family myself, mainly the long rambling ransom note on the Ramsey’s stationery (who writes a ransom note AT THE SCENE?), the odd amount of money demanded ($118,000, which is not just a weird figure, but relatively small — why go to all the trouble for less than a million?), and the fact that her body was found in the house. Why even bother with a ransom note at all? And since no one was ever presented as a suspect all these years EXCEPT the Ramseys, it made you wonder, if not them, WHO?
I’m quite intrigued that they finally have someone in custody, and also floored it took TEN YEARS to get to this point! I read on CNN that John Mark Karr already confessed to certain aspects of the crime (!!) and that several months back the Ramseys were aware of the new lead and that an arrest may be forthcoming. Patsy knowing this before she died must’ve given her some comfort.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out!

An interesting coincidence that I just located a few minutes ago. It seems that John Ramsey and John Karr had a at least one additional thing in common, other than their first names and the allegation that they both lived in GA at the same time. They also had similar tastes in vehicles, they each owned a Jaguar XJ6 in 1997. Karr’s Jag was a 1987 and Ramsey’s Jag was a 1995. By July 5, 2000 Ramsey’s Jag was being driven by a new owner in Oklahoma, and on July 31, 2000 Kerr’s Alabama vehicle registration expired. This information doesn’t in any way connect the two men, in any way shape or form, but dang, talk about six-degrees of separation!!!

I’m totally surprised by the active and real anger I felt today just thinking about the person who tortured and murdered this little girl. That being said…I can only imagine the feelings the family and friends of the Ramseys. Not only did they have to deal with the horror of what actually happened to that baby girl…but to also live under the cloud of suspicion for ten years…?..without any real forward motion on the case? I wouldn’t be surprised at all if all the stress over the past ten years totally sapped Patsy Ramsey’s immune system and hastened her to her demise. I’m thankful that there is an arrest made…and I hope they have enough evidence to prove what happened to Jonbenet in a court of law.

I must admit that I had always thought Patsy had something to do with Jon Benet’s death. But it looks like I was wrong. I am really interested to see what happens from here.

If it indeed turns out the parents had nothing to do with her murder, there are a bunch of media dogs who should be flogged within an inch of their lives. The media treatment of this case was beyond disgusting.

The story gives anyone, especially those with children, chills. But are we sure this isn’t a publicity stunt?
The article talks about the vast research Karr conducted on the subject and a professor’s suggestion that Karr write a book on it. Sorry to suggest this conspiracy theory, but after Freygate, I don’t trust anyone.
I do hope that I am wrong and that they have caught the murderer. Jon Benet, her late mother Patsy, her father and brother deserve to rest in peace.

I’m not all that convinced, although I did call “the intruder angle” weeks ago in a post I wrote here on Crime Rant, Karr is nothing more than a twisted, media-starved nutbag who wants to be part of this case. This morning he admitted–on videotape–that he indeed was there when JonBenet died. He said he loved her. He called her death an “accident.” (Raped, strangled and beaten to death an accident?) But that look on his face, to me, screams of a infamous killer wannabe. Still, according to news accounts, they have a DNA match, but then that is pure speculation, too. There’s a press conference coming up later this morning, so we’ll find out more.
Friends and family (including this dude’s ex-wife) are saying Karr wasn’t even in Colorado during the time JonBenet was murdered.
Don’t you just love how the media immediately uses this guy’s middle name whenever they speak of him or publish his photo? Makes him appear more serial-killer-like, more evil.
For an author who devotes his days to crime, this is surely an interesting development to follow in what has become one of the most high profile murder cases in decades.
We had a great true crime author, one of the top journalists working in crime today, lined up for a guest blog the end of this week or early next week (who has written a book on the JonBenet case), but he is so busy with media right now, we’ll have to wait a while more for his intelligent, astute input into all things crime, including the JonBenet case.

FINALLY !!!!!!!! I was just elated when I heard about an areest last night. Of course for the obvious, justice for Jon Benet, but aso for the fact that I have NEVER, EVER believed these parents could do that to their little girl. I know that what we see can be an illusion but come on. The parents took polygraphs and PASSED. Plus, as we see the Colorado police stopped the investigation before it was ever started. I understand that families are initally suspects but when it became clear (like from hour 1) that the police were CERTAIN (wrongly) that the Ramseys were at fault they lawyered up. Is that wrong? Are we not INNOCENT until proven guilty? Free at last, Free at last……

Was I correct in reading somewhere that people are claiming that the Ramsey family knew that there might be an arrest before Patsy passed away?
It seemed very strange to me that all of a sudden after nearly 10 years, this guy is arrested….just about 2 months after Patsy’s death.

This guy looks sick–his eyes, his strange baby-face, even the way his shirt is buttoned up at the top.
I just read that he drugged and had sex with JonBenet before killing her (he said he loved her?) She was 6?? Beyond disgusting.
I know the parents are completely innocent and absolved of all wrongdoing here, but I’ve gotta say, the way they had that little girl made up in heavy make up and exotic clothing… She was beautiful, no doubt, and obviously attracted attention. The wrong kind. Very sad.
Awesome that justice will prevail here.

The more I learn about this guy, the more I wonder if he’s just a JonBenet obsessed nutjob. Why is he talking so freely to reporters? And I read that he said he picked up JonBenet “after school” and took her to her family’s basement. But she disappeared from her bed in the middle of the night. Also, he says he drugged JonBenet, but the autopsy report showed no drugs in her system (or at least that’s what the public was told).
They’re also saying on MSN.com that he wrote Patsy several letters, including a confession and expressed remorse. Perhaps that’s how the police first found out about this guy and were just following up on the lead. And considering how the case was bungled by the cops, maybe Karr was able to acquire some details not known to the general public, hence giving more credibility to his confession.
Guilty or not of JonBenet’s murder, the guy gives me the creeps.
This is getting more interesting by the minute!

Melissa, whether Karr killed JonBenet or not, he gives me the creeps too.
There are just things that don’t seem to add up right now……
Also, I hope what I am going to say next doesn’t sound too sick……but part of me really wants Karr to be the one who killed that poor baby, it almost seems better than believing her mother did it….I hope that makes sense.

This guy looks like he wants to be in the limelight; and since they wouldn’t let him teach in Bangkok anymore, why not do some PR and attach himself to one of the most famous cases of our time??
Oh, he’s a child molester alright, but something about him makes me think he likes little boys. And those eyes….. he won’t look diectly at the people asking him questions, bingo Gregg and Matt.
I know we could be wrong. I think they HAD to arrest him because Bankok didn’t want him, and the US certainly doesn’t want a pervert teaching in our schools.
I guess there’s the possibility that he was sneaking into that house months before the murder took place. He may have found a pay stub with John Ramsey’s bonus amount on it. He may have been studying Patsy’s handwriting until he thought he had it perfected. He learns his way about the house. And he looks tiny enough to fit through that basement window. Let’s face it, these guys may be slime, but very often they are intelligent. Oxymoron if you ask me.
But I’m sticking with my gut instinct…. wrong guy.

He knows his bridges are about to burn here when the TRUTH finally comes out about mentally-challenged Karr . . . probably arranged for as a stooge by his friends, Boulderite self-centered exibitionist Michael Tracey and deteriorated detective lou smit. Some day a lot of people will seek out the truth and realize that the case SHOULD have been declared closed a few weeks ago at the conclusion of a certain funeral. No, I don’t like to dance on the graves of the dead, but, let the chips fall where they may. The TRUTH people. Seek the truth, not your heart. Where is the violent history of Karr? NONE. He was home with his wife in ALABAMA ! Three other people were in the house THAT night with JonBenet and Karr wasn’t one of them. Now Mary Keenan Lacey is trying to buy time to explain to Karr that JonBenet wasn’t AT school to be picked up by ANYONE including HIM as he has stated . . . it was Christmas, people. I don’t feel Karr is guilty. Too many things are not adding up and I don’t agree with the woman who says Karr and JonBenet look alike. Just my opinion.

Thank you Larry Norwich! Great minds think alike!The intruder/kidnapping theory is a joke because: a kidnapper would use an assistant& have a prepared concise ransom note asking for 500,000 or more. A kidnapper would NOT write a practice ransom note, toss it(waste can)and start another using the Ramseys paper/pen in the house. A kidnapper would use Ether/duct tape and GET OUT. JonBenet’s Murder was an emotional type of crime(I’ll get even with you). JonBenet was brought to the basement where the garrote was made and a stun gun was used prior to strangling her & bashing her skull-crime of hatred
not what a kidnapper would do(to much time,to risky – get in/out with the girl and now the kidnapper killed his ransom!)

Pasty Lied! about feeding JonBenet the pineapple! Pasty’s fingerprints were on the bowl. JonBenet knew and trusted her attacker. Pasty might have had DID -Old diagnosis was mulitiple personality disorder. I belive that Pasty or a part of Pasty became very angry or she was jealous of JonBenet and felt she had to destroy her.

Re Karr’s Jag – check the list of suspicios events prior to the crime as listed by Lou Smit, you will find mention of an unknown Jag in the neighborhood that evening. The Jag and a van.
Karr appears to be quite the jet setter, while all over the world he is still actively assiciated with at an address in CA – right along with a beeper number.
How he is involved in the Ramsey tragedy is one thing – how he supports his lifestyle may very well be another. Do you think he is a link to the $20B internet child pornography industry?

Hey Crimerant – blowing hot Air on Karr! How refreshing to realize that there are humans out there with a brain – thank god!(smile) I totally agree. Isn’t it convenient that Karr bumped into Tracey – which will help increase book sales! I am a psychotherapist and I have had clients that had abusive crazy mothers that almost killed them. Look at Adria Gates – she was to crazy to hide it. For those that believe in the mind / body connection – cancer is usually about a long carried secret or hatred – sounds familiar?

Larry, every time I try to let my mind believe that one of the Ramsey’s killed JonBenet, I can’t get over the thought of the garot…. and her being sexually molested. I know many times they say that over-kill is very personal.
If indeed it is one of the Ramsey’s, then I’d put my money on the son. Little sister gets LOTS and lots of attention from mommy….the way she was paraded around just makes me ill. I’ve seen the reality shows of these mothers and their sick need for their child to act 20 when she’s 6. Win, win, win, that’s all that matters!! Oh wait, I forgot, I have a son at home… oh well, he can fend for himself. This pagent is MUCH more important right now. I’ll just give him a few extra presents this XMAS.
So daddy’s too busy at work….. the may have been harboring an insane jealousy of his little sister, and he wants some of that almighty attention that every child rightfully craves.
The parents know he did it, so they have to cover for him and protect him. Hence, the written note (for which they never could rule out Patsy Ramsey) and the exact amount of JOhn’s bonus. I barely remember seeing the son on any news reports, or Patsy and John mentioning him much….saw a picture of him on a XMAS family photo, that’s about it.
Oh well, Matt and Gregg said to brainstorm…. so that’s my thought on the POSSIBILITY of one of the Ramsey’s being the killer. Thanks.

You know; I initally suspected Burk Ramsey too…for the EXACT reasons Kathy Sturgeon does, but after reading the articles where they had that retired detective assigned to the case [Lee??? First or last name? NOT sure but know it was NOT "the" famous Lee] who stated he initally upon FIRST observations of the evidence opinioned that it WAS Patsy Ramsey who killed JB BY accident…during a fit of rage becuase JB had wet the bed [happens all the time, mothers-fathers killing their daughters (or children) for bed-wetting.
Then for some odd reason decided to forsake everything his 25+ years in solving crimes had earned him and threw it all away by defending them instead, thus successfully throwing shock waves along with massive doubt about WHO did kill JB into the already screwed up crime scene...it was rumored that he fell victim to a set up by a pro; Patsy Ramsey herself, who played to his religious beliefs.
It beat the h*ll out of me, WHY... but what I can't get out of MY head is the fact that Patsy claimed to have stayed up later then everyone else to pack for the next days trip, then into the early morning hours went up and went to bed...
However, WHEN police responded to her 911 call, they noted in their records that she was STILL WEARING THE SAME CLOTHES from the party the night before...this from a woman obsessed with looks, beauty, perfection....wanted US to believe she got up showered, makeup-ed and threw on the same dirty clothes from the night before?!
Nah...something isn't right with THAT picture especially since the police "checked the entire house" yet managed to miss THAT very room...HOW?
Maybe becuase the Ramseys told them it was impossible to enter, or sealed off unable to be entered etc...successfully wasting time...and tampering with "evidence" when her tiny body was "found" by her father who just happened to take along a friend as a witness to his "discovery".
I also can't dismiss that a obscure, seldom-used, locked room would happen to have Patsy's paint brushes handy to use as the "thingy" whatever it's called or pronounced around JB neck...and that the "sexual" damage done to this poor child was initally [again by this same detective ] labeled a “raw-spot” that appeared to be from [HIS opinion] “wiping too rough or hard on delicate tissue” ie; wetting her pants and being cleaned up by someone VERY angry with her.
Which would also explain the no-blood scenerio found, around her head inspite of clear blunt force trauma or no blood in her panties except for a small drop which would be consistant with surface bleeding such as a scratch/slight tear.
I don’t know WHO killed JBR and I don’t think we’ll ever know the REAL truth but I think I can safely say “PeeWee Karr” did not.

Hey Kathy Sturgeon! I like you thinking out of the box regarding Burk – good possibility – but the coroner said that the force to JonBenet head was made by an adult. Burk was 9 and probably did not have the strength to kill her. Also, Burk would have cracked with the police interaction.

Cricket, yeah, I think it was Lou Smit or something like that… I watched a documentary of him going through the Ramsey house…. it was very convincing at the time that it was NOT one of the Ramsey’s. I don’t know why it should shock me that PERHAPS a mother killed her child in such a horrific way. God knows I’ve read enough true crime books about how “sick” some mothers really are.
What is the history of this bed-wetting thing with JonBenet? I keep hearing that she wet the bed “one too many times”. Was she a constant bed-wetter? And if she was… what are the phsychological ramifications of that?! She was old enough to NOT wet the bed….unless she was “afraid or scared” of her mother for some reason.
We don’t know what went on behind those closed doors. Did Patsy “intimidate” JonBenet into doing her best? Did she threaten her? All speculation of course, but tough stuff for such a little girl. Then throw some possible mental problems and a violent temper on Patsy’s part into the mix….
DARN, one minute I can see Burke doing it, the next, I see Patsy doing it. WON’T SOMEBODY PLEASE PUT A STOP TO THIS MADNESS…………..hehehehehehe.

Hi Kathy; Yeah THAT was who it was…LOU, not “Lee” geesh…giggle.
From what I have read, heard and seen in print JBR wet the bed CONSISTANTLY, and it was attributed to some type of psychological trauma [hinted at as maybe] in the form of sexual abuse,
which at the time made sense….IF she was being sexually abuse I don’t think JR was the one doing it, maybe that freaky “santa claus” guy, who saw her every year???
Speaking of someone who saw her; did anyone EVER babysit those kids? Surely the parents didn’t always take them everywhere with them, maybe a nany, sitter…I don’t think I’ve EVER heard of someone actually babysitting them ever…did they ever have any sitters?
As for the stories on bed-wetting, I too have read many stories of parents killing their child becuase of bed-wetting, the only difference that [at the time] I could see was that these parents weren’t rich, well-to-do and lived amoung and called as friends; attornies, judges and VIP’s like the Ramseys did.
Can you just imagine one of THOSE suspected parents calling 911 hours after the fact, calling friends and their minister and attorney together at the house BEFORE police arrive, refuse to take a polygraphs seperately, and eventually refuse altogether, demand they be questioned in their own home….and the many other things the Ramseys did that stood out like sore thumbs….and actually getting away without even once having handcuffs on? I don’t think so.
I forget who said it best [some commercial on TV...giggle] when they said; “If you have the BEST ATTORNEY MONEY CAN BUY, the JUSTICE system is a GREAT thing in THIS country” I agree.

Hey Cricket and Kathy! How can I type a several paragraphs as you do? Anyway, I am a psychotherapist from Dallas and mothers ususally do not kill their daughters due to bed wetting. The bed wetting might be a big reminder of something gone wrong – such as sexual abuse or if JonBenet was being sexually abused by a family member or family friend – Pasty may have in her mind decided to eliminated JonBenet vs confront the perpetrator or confront Pasty’s issues – ie: she could have been sexually abused and did not want to deal with it – thereby eliminate JB the reminder of something gone wrong. A theory.

Just as we thought – John Karr is not guilty. No DNA match and the Boulder DA can’t place him at Boulder during the murder of JB. Even though John Karr is a pedofile that needed to be pulled off the street – the Boulder DA should not have suggested 1st degree murder and kidnapping – it’s make them look inadequate and it is quite embarrassing for our country as a whole. I believe that M. Tracey’s plan was to frame anyone other than the Ramseys and to help sell his book (Tracry is good friends with the Ramseys)!

I am so very confused about this whole mess, I do have to say Karr did not do it his stories do not match, and how dare anyone say JonBenet Ramsey’s brother did it,”NOT” I still believe it was her mother and the father was also involved, just look at everything Patsy Ramsey was a former so called BEATY QUEEN, and wants her daughter to follow into her foot steps that’s just plain sick for god sake she is only six years old,she probably never really had alife being a six year old girl. Her mother being strick with her and all and oh we can’t have bed wetting it isn’t proper for young ladies WHAT young lady who she made her look like she was 20yrs old just sick I tell you. I have a little beauty queen who is two yrs old just plain beautiful I want my baby girl to be a baby girl and have a life and maybe one day if she asked me can I be in a pagent fine and not push her.. I am so sad about JonBenet my heart is broken how in the world can someone be so cruel like that she did not deserve what she got, and in her own house, and look at this scene Patsy had on the same clothing she never went to bed, and her father who all of the sudden found the tiny body that makes me sick to my stomach. You know from what I saw through all the news paper etc… Her parents were not even crying if they were it was all fony Patsy new she was going to die and so she took JonBenet with her. I think she was mean to that little girl and JonBenet had to be this perfect little girl
BOOO on all of them I think that the media was paid off including the Boulder Police Dept just because they had money BOOOOOOOO on money they can all sit on it. And what’s this I hear John ramsey is leaving the country ok ok what is he covering
up somebody needs to tell us all the truth. That beautiful baby girl needs to rest.

well. here it is. I am at my folks house north of Atlanta until early Monday morning. I was going to go visit a friend of my sisters that passed away 13 years ago(at age 23 of natural causes) grave(our whole family was close with his whole family and he is who I wanted sis to marry..). So, I thought hey, JonBenet’s is close to where I am staying and on the way to the other gravesite of the friend, why not go and pay my respects. So, I will be putting a pink rose with babies breath on her grave and as I usually do with the friend a red rose for him.
It is so hard to imagine that JBR would be 16 this holiday season. She would probably be on the homecoming court of her high school. Youtube of course has some collage video’s done of the different pageants as well as one guy videoing his going to the site. From the video it looks beautiful.
Also, according to the video, the guy said that for a while they bugged the tree that is beside her gravesite for any gravesite confessions or clues etc.
Such sad circumstances on both deaths, JBR and the family friend. Oh, for those who were wondering what at 23 could be a natural cause, he had an enlarged heart. He was with the Military (can’t recall which branch at the moment) and had been working on deep dives in a tank the few days leading up to it.

Oh JBR you’ll always be in my prayers and I hope whosoever killed you fall in the deepest pit in hell and gets shiskababed by the devil himself/herself. Very pretty little girl ,if this tragedy didn’t happen you’d probably be Miss Universe. *Sniff*

well JonBenet in our heart in fact that passed 11 years and whole the world remeber her .. am from Kuwait and i heard about that from net and news befor years but when JonBenet died i was young 6 or 7 years … so i start read about her when u was 16 or so … i did a presentation in English Class about her and all the whole class like it there was more than 3 class there and i show some videos about her … but about who killed her …. well it’s hard when some said it’s her mother … well maybe and maybe not … but the baby girl was 6 years old was taken from her bed at 2 am she doesn’t cry or yells or push it mean that some one she knew very well had taken her …. that what i believe in …. maybe some one from her family …. but what she need from us now … to tell who killed her … she need a rest
