Paging Dr. Phil: You’re in Trouble, Big Guy

Friday, January 18th, 2008

dr_phil_mcgraw.jpgJust because our readers like to wag the finger with an update now and then… Here’s some news being reported by Zap:

A complaint has been filed against Dr. Phil with the California Board of Psychology.

The complaint reportedly accuses Dr. Phil McGraw of practicing without a license when he visited Britney Spears at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after her meltdown earlier this month, according to TMZ.com.

Dr. Phil is also accused of violating the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. The complaint alleges Dr. Phil practiced clinical psychology without a license and further violated doctor-patient privilege by discussing the pop star’s case with the media.

Dr. Phil has never been licensed to practice in California, and he is no longer licensed in his home state of Texas.

McGraw failed to complete the conditions imposed as disciplinary sanctions by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists in 1989.

At that time a former therapy client had filed a complaint against him, claiming their relationship was inappropriate.

McGraw later admitted giving her a job but denied touching her.

Soon after he was officially reprimanded, McGraw closed his private practice.

We don’t know anything about those complaints being reported by Zap, but we do love the idea of a doctor being forced to take his own medicine. Maybe Oprah can have him on her show to apologize some more?

Dr. Phil as Ambulance Chaser

dr- phil.jpgAmbulance chasing for ratings.

That’s sure what it seemed like to your Crime Rant guys when we heard that TV’s Dr. Phil McGraw visited Britney Spears at the hospital. He wasn’t invited. He wasn’t her doctor. He had no staff privileges.

He basically ambushed a very troubled young woman in the middle of her very public meltdown.

Here’s what our pals at TMZ are saying:

TMZ has learned Britney had no idea Dr. Phil was coming to her room and indeed when he walked in she became agitated and walked out. She eventually came back in and he pretty much did all the talking for around 15 minutes.

One psychiatrist called it “intrusive and inappropriate.” Another shrink told us the hospital “is supposed to be a safe place. If the patient doesn’t want to see someone, that person doesn’t get in — period.”

Another shrink, who said he was “outraged and disgusted,” added, “It is incredible that the hospital allowed Dr. Phil in her room. It’s a total violation of her rights.”

Make no mistake. None of this was about reaching out to help Britney. It was all about a TV show he wants to air this week. Yup, a TV show! Britney’s parents, in another example of pimping their daughters (remember Jamie Lynn, Brit’s little sister, is pregnant and has sold the rights to baby pictures already) for attention and bucks.

Shame on all of them.
